City Heights students at a Beach Science program
Price Philanthropies’ Ocean Science Education Fund was established to increase access to hands-on ocean science education for Title 1 schools (schools with large concentration of low-income students) in San Diego County. The Ocean Science Fund supports the Aquarium Express and Beach Science Programs. The Birch Aquarium provides up to 420 programs each year.
The Aquarium Express van travels to schools to provide instructor-led Discovery Lab programs. Students participate in a variety of hands-on programs, such as Tide Pool Treasures, Fish Diversity, and Squid Dissection.
Beach Science is a three-part experiential learning program for 6th grade students. Students participate in hands-on activities, both in their classroom and during a day-long field trip. During the field trip, students collect data at a working research pier, meet with a scientist, and visit the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.
